２０２３年５月８日に新B４とM１のメンバーで旧東海道の街歩きを実施しました。品川駅から蒲田、天空橋周辺まで徒歩と電車で１０km以上の移動でした。今回の目的はM１の授業の調査でした。B４とM１は初めての顔合わせとなりB４は楽しく参加させていただきました。
On May 8, 2023, new B4 and M1 members conducted a city walk along the old Tokaido. We traveled more than 10 km on foot and by train from Shinagawa Station to Tachiaigawa and Tenkubashi. The purpose of the walk was to survey the site for the M1 students’ project, and it was the first time for B4 and M1 to meet each other, and B4 enjoyed participating in the event.
今回歩いた旧東海道とは？
江戸から京都間を指す旧東海道。東京から京都までの間には五十三の宿があり、品川宿は一番目の宿場です。江戸時代には東海道の玄関口として栄えかつては多くの人で賑わっていました。現在は下町感あふれる商店街で賑やかな感じでした。昔ながらの鉄工所などもあり、趣を感じました。
What is the Old Tokaido?
The Old Tokaido is the route between Edo and Kyoto. There are 53 inns between Tokyo and Kyoto, and Shinagawa-juku is the first inn. In the Edo period, it developed as the gateway of Edo and used to be crowded with many people. Today, it is a busy shopping area with a downtown feel. There were also old-fashioned ironworks, which gave the area a unique atmosphere.
品川浦船溜まり
品川浦はかつて豊富な水揚げを誇る、海苔の主要産地でした。屋形船、釣船が舳先を並べ昔ながらの古い家並みと背景に並ぶタワーマンションのコントラストが楽しめました。都内に海に並んだ家は意外な一面を見ることが出来ました。
Shinagawa-ura Boat Pool
Shinagawa-ura was a major seaweed production area, boasting an extensive catch. The contrast between the rows of old houses with houseboats and fishing boats lined up under their bows and the towering condominiums in the background was enjoyable. The houses lined up on the sea in the middle of the city were an unexpected sight.
品川と言えば高層マンションやビルをイメージしがちですがこうした瓦葺きの古民家も立ち並ぶ商店街。
Shinagawa is often imagined of high-rise apartments and buildings, but this shopping district is also lined with old houses with tiled roofs.
品川寺
８０６～８１０年開創と伝えられる品川区で最も古い寺院。手前の地蔵菩薩は三メートル近くあり１３００年の間、旅人や住民、観光客を見守っています。木々に囲われる門構えは荘厳な佇まいでした。
Shinagawa Temple
The oldest temple in Shinagawa Ward is said to have been founded in 806-810. The Jizo Bosatsu in front stands nearly three meters high and has been watching over travelers, residents, and tourists for 1,300 years. The gate surrounded by trees was a grand sight.
五十間鼻無縁仏堂
天空橋駅から徒歩五分程度。多摩川の河口から２km上流のほうに位置する仏堂。この仏堂は多摩川において水難で亡くなった方々の霊を慰めるためのモノだそうです。
Gojyumabana Muenobotoke Hall
About a five-minute walk from Tenkubashi Station. This Buddhist temple is located 2 km upstream from the mouth of the Tama River. This Buddhist temple is said to comfort the souls of those who died in a water accident in the Tama River.
対岸は川崎とちょうど神奈川と東京の境目で運よく近くの羽田から飛び立つ飛行機を見る事ができました。
On the other side of the river is Kawasaki, right on the border of Kanagawa and Tokyo, and we were lucky enough to see a plane take off from nearby Haneda.
B４とM１の初交流という事でみんなが楽しめた街歩きでした。授業の調査ということで、実際にこういった建築があったら地域の交流が深まるななど想像を膨らまし楽しく過ごせました。江戸時代から続く街並みはどこか懐かしさを感じさせてくれるものでした。
This was the first exchange between B4 and M1 students, and everyone had a great time walking around the city. As this was a site survey for a project, we had a good time imagining how the community would interact with each other if there were buildings like this in the area. The townscape, which has been in existence since the Edo period, gave us a sense of nostalgia.
